W6v3 12-inch subwoofer (600 W, dual 4 Ω voice coils)
The 12W6v3 delivers intensely powerful sub-bass without sacrificing sound quality. It shares several technologies with JL Audio's flagship W7AE subwoofers, providing advantages in motor linearity and suspension behaviour, combined with an efficient cooling circuit for reduced distortion and outstanding dynamic balance.
It is optimised for a sealed enclosure of just 1.0 cu ft (28.3 l) or a 1.3 cu ft (36.8 l) ported enclosure. Greater excursion capability and higher power handling set it apart from the JL Audio 12W3v3, allowing higher output. The dual 4 Ω voice coils allow use as a 2 Ω or 8 Ω driver.
Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA) optimised motor
JL Audio's proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is an FEA-based modelling suite first developed in 1997 and refined to address speaker motor linearity. The result is greatly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients — tight, clean, articulate bass.
Elevated Frame Cooling
JL Audio's patented Elevated Frame Cooling design channels cool air through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil. This minimises dynamic parameter shifts and power compression, improving both power handling and sound quality.
Floating Cone Attach Method (FCAM)
This JL Audio assembly technique ensures correct surround geometry in the finished speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
Pole-Vent Airflow Control (PVAC)
In high-powered subwoofers, thermal management is essential. PVAC controls airflow through the pole vent to help regulate voice coil temperature during demanding use.

About the JL Audio 12W6v3-D4
From our tech experts at CEN
A JL Audio 12 inch W6 Series subwoofer driver, dual 4 ohm, handling 600w RMS.
Who it suits
Drivers building a system around a properly specified enclosure rather than a box off the shelf. W6 brings a significant jump in cone control and output over W3.
Our tech experts advise
This is a driver, not a finished system: enclosure volume and tuning decide most of what you hear, and JL publish specifications worth building to, and the dual 4 ohm coils decide how it should be wired to your amplifier. We build enclosures to suit both driver and vehicle at our Beeston workshop. Installation is priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need an amplifier for this subwoofer?
A: Yes, unless it is an active (powered) subwoofer with a built-in amplifier. Passive subwoofers need an external amplifier matched to the RMS power and impedance shown in the Specification tab.
Q: What size enclosure does this subwoofer need?
A: The recommended enclosure volume is listed in the Specification tab where the manufacturer provides it. As a rule, sealed enclosures give tighter, more accurate bass while ported enclosures deliver more output. Contact CEN if you would like a recommendation for your build.
Q: What does RMS power mean?
A: RMS is the continuous power a subwoofer can handle, and it is the number that matters when matching an amplifier. Peak or max figures describe short bursts only. Match your amplifier output to the RMS rating in the Specification tab.
Q: Sealed or ported enclosure - which should I choose?
A: Sealed boxes are compact and produce tight, controlled bass suited to sound quality builds. Ported boxes are larger and produce more output at low frequencies, suited to those who want maximum impact. Either works well when built to the recommended volume.
Q: Can CEN build or supply an enclosure and fit everything?
A: Yes. CEN supplies enclosures and offers professional installation from our Nottingham premises, including amplifier wiring. Contact us to discuss your build.
Q: What enclosure does the JL Audio 12W6v3-D4 need?
A: It is optimised for a 1.0 cu ft (28.3 litre) sealed enclosure or a 1.3 cu ft (36.8 litre) ported enclosure. Allow for the 191 mm mounting depth, 13 mm pole vent clearance and 2.97 litre driver displacement.
Q: Can the 12W6v3-D4 be wired to 2 ohms?
A: Yes. The dual 4 ohm voice coils can be wired for a 2 ohm or an 8 ohm load to suit your amplifier.
Q: How much amplifier power does the 12W6v3-D4 need?
A: JL Audio recommends 200 to 600 W RMS. It is rated to handle 600 W RMS continuously.
