How to choose a DAC or streamer
A DAC converts digital music into an analogue signal for your amplifier or headphones. If you mainly listen through headphones at a desk, a desktop DAC and headphone amplifier such as the FiiO K11 or iFi Zen DAC 3 is a good start. For a phone, a USB-C dongle or Bluetooth receiver brings better sound to your pocket. If you want to play Spotify, Tidal or Qobuz through your hi-fi without a computer, choose a network streamer such as the iFi Zen Stream. See also our hi-res players and headphones.
DACs & Streamers FAQs
Q: What is the difference between a DAC and a streamer?
A: A DAC converts a digital signal from a source such as a computer or TV. A streamer plays music from online services or your home network itself, and many models, such as the Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2, include a DAC.
Q: What does R2R mean?
A: R2R refers to a resistor ladder DAC design, used in models such as the FiiO K13 R2R and K17 R2R and the Shanling EH90.
Q: Do I need a phono stage for my turntable?
A: Yes, if your turntable or amplifier does not have one built in. This range includes the iFi Zen Air Phono, which handles MM and MC cartridges, and the iFi Phono 3.
