How to choose a home backup battery

List the devices you want to keep running in a power cut, such as your broadband router, lights, phones, a laptop or the fridge freezer. Add up their wattage to check the power station's output can handle them all at once, then estimate how many hours you need to cover. A 1,000Wh unit will keep a router and phones going for a long time, while 2,000Wh or more gives you more scope for a fridge freezer and extra devices. If you want to add capacity later, choose a model that supports an expansion battery. Pair your unit with solar panels to recharge during a longer outage, or see our off-grid living range.

Home Backup FAQs

Q: How long will a power station run my fridge?

A: Divide the power station's capacity in watt-hours by the fridge's average power draw in watts, then allow for some conversion losses. Fridges cycle on and off, so real-world runtime is usually longer than the rated wattage suggests.

Q: Is a power station safe to use indoors?

A: Yes. Unlike a petrol generator, a battery power station burns no fuel and produces no exhaust fumes, so it can be used inside your home. Keep the vents clear.

Q: Can I recharge it without mains power?

A: Yes. Most can be recharged from solar panels or a car's 12V socket, which is useful during a longer power cut.
