How to choose soundproofing

Most installs use layers. Start with a deadening mat on bare metal panels to stop vibration and resonance, then add a foam liner on top to absorb airborne noise and insulate against heat and cold. For a speaker upgrade, treating the doors gives the most noticeable gain in bass and clarity, so a door or speaker pack is a good starting point. For a full van or camper conversion, a bulk roll of deadening plus a thermal liner covers the large panels economically. A roller tool and panel prep spray help the mat bond properly. Pair door treatment with new component speakers or coaxial speakers for the biggest improvement.

Soundproofing FAQs

Q: How much sound deadening do I need?

A: Around 1-1.5 square metres treats a pair of front door outer skins; a thorough full-car treatment runs 4-6 square metres. Sheet coverage is listed in each product's Specification tab.

Q: Where should I apply sound deadening first?

A: Front doors give the biggest gain for both road noise and audio quality, then boot floor and wheel arches. Aim for 60-80% coverage of each panel rather than total coverage.

Q: Does sound deadening improve audio quality?

A: Significantly — your door is effectively your speaker enclosure, and deadening turns a flexing panel into a solid one, so the speakers you already own produce cleaner, tighter bass.

Q: Why buy sound deadening from CEN?

A: We stock Dynamat, Silent Coat, Comfort Mat and Dodo Mat with genuine UK stock, and we fit deadening professionally from our Nottingham premises — usually alongside speaker installs when the panels are already off.

Q: What is the difference between deadening and insulation?

A: Deadening mat adds mass to metal panels to stop vibration. Foam insulation absorbs airborne sound and reduces heat transfer. Many installs use both.

Q: Can CEN soundproof my vehicle?

A: Yes. Our Beeston, Nottingham workshop can supply and fit soundproofing, on its own or as part of a speaker or full system upgrade.
