Soundproofing is the highest-value early job in any van conversion: deaden the panels while they're bare, insulate over the top, and every mile and every night in the finished van is quieter and warmer. Skip it, and you're living with a steel drum you've carpeted.
Step 1: sound deadening on bare metal
A van's large flat panels resonate — road noise, rain and engine drone all amplify through them. Butyl deadening sheets stuck directly to the metal add mass and kill the ring; you don't need 100% coverage, just the resonant centres of each panel. Doors, wheel arches, floor and the big side panels are the priority order.
Step 2: insulation over the top
With the metal deadened, a layer like Dodo's DEAD-EZY self-adhesive liner handles the second job: thermal insulation and acoustic absorption across sides, roof and floor. This is the difference between a van that's merely quieter and one that holds warmth overnight and doesn't drip condensation onto your bed.
Why now, not later
Every subsequent layer of the conversion — battens, ply, cladding, units — buries the metal beyond reach. An afternoon with a roller while the van is bare costs a fraction of retro-fitting through a finished interior.
