13W7AE-D1.5: 13.5-inch (345mm) subwoofer driver, dual 1.5 ohm
Few subwoofers can genuinely justify terms like "reference" or "ultimate" — the JL Audio 13W7AE is one that can. It takes the W7 design to its highest level, with a linear excursion envelope exceeding 32mm (1.25in) one-way and a suspension capable of over 4 inches of peak-to-peak excursion. Its piston diameter is 28% larger than the 12W7AE's, making it a serious driver for the most demanding high-performance builds.
Best used with amplifier power in the 500W–1500W RMS range, it is optimised for a 53.1-litre (1.875 cu ft) sealed enclosure or a 67.3-litre (2.375 cu ft) ported enclosure.
The W7AE Anniversary Edition celebrates the 10th anniversary of the W7 subwoofer launch. Functionally identical to the original W7, it is distinguished by the following cosmetic differences:
- Satin-black powder-coated baskets
- Bright anodised surround clamp ring
- Anniversary Edition cone badge
- Anniversary Edition terminal label
W-Cone
A unit-body cone assembly delivering high stiffness with minimal mass. The shape provides torsional rigidity that helps maintain voice coil alignment at the suspension limits.
OverRoll surround
Uses space wasted in conventional speaker designs to control the W7's massive excursion without sacrificing cone area.
Floating Cone Attach Method (FCAM)
A JL Audio assembly technique that ensures correct surround geometry in the finished speaker, improving excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
Radially cross-drilled pole piece
Directs airflow onto the voice coil former to enhance thermal dissipation and power handling. Works alongside Elevated Frame cooling technology to remove heat from the voice coil, reducing power compression and improving linearity.
Engineered lead-wire system
Carefully designed lead-wire routing and attachments ensure controlled, quiet lead-wire behaviour even under extreme excursion demands.

About the JL Audio 13W7AE-D1.5
From our tech experts at CEN
A JL Audio 13.5 inch W7 Series subwoofer driver, handling 1500w RMS.
Who it suits
Drivers building a system around a properly specified enclosure rather than a box off the shelf. W7 is the flagship and expects a serious amplifier and a properly built enclosure.
Our tech experts advise
This is a driver, not a finished system: enclosure volume and tuning decide most of what you hear, and JL publish specifications worth building to. We build enclosures to suit both driver and vehicle at our Beeston workshop. Installation is priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need an amplifier for this subwoofer?
A: Yes, unless it is an active (powered) subwoofer with a built-in amplifier. Passive subwoofers need an external amplifier matched to the RMS power and impedance shown in the Specification tab.
Q: What size enclosure does this subwoofer need?
A: The recommended enclosure volume is listed in the Specification tab where the manufacturer provides it. As a rule, sealed enclosures give tighter, more accurate bass while ported enclosures deliver more output. Contact CEN if you would like a recommendation for your build.
Q: What does RMS power mean?
A: RMS is the continuous power a subwoofer can handle, and it is the number that matters when matching an amplifier. Peak or max figures describe short bursts only. Match your amplifier output to the RMS rating in the Specification tab.
Q: Sealed or ported enclosure - which should I choose?
A: Sealed boxes are compact and produce tight, controlled bass suited to sound quality builds. Ported boxes are larger and produce more output at low frequencies, suited to those who want maximum impact. Either works well when built to the recommended volume.
Q: Can CEN build or supply an enclosure and fit everything?
A: Yes. CEN supplies enclosures and offers professional installation from our Nottingham premises, including amplifier wiring. Contact us to discuss your build.
Q: What enclosure does the JL Audio 13W7AE-D1.5 need?
A: JL Audio optimises it for a 1.875 cu ft (53.1 litre) sealed enclosure or a 2.375 cu ft (67.3 litre) ported enclosure. It is also available pre-loaded in the JL Audio CLS113RG-W7AE sealed ProWedge.
Q: What impedance can the 13W7AE-D1.5 be wired to?
A: It has dual 1.5 ohm voice coils, so wiring them in series gives a 3 ohm load and wiring them in parallel gives 0.75 ohms. Match the final load to what your amplifier is rated for.
Q: Does the Anniversary Edition perform differently from the standard W7?
A: No. The W7AE is functionally identical to the original W7. The differences are cosmetic: a satin-black powder-coated basket, bright anodised surround clamp ring, and Anniversary Edition cone badge and terminal label.
