13TW5v2-2: 13.5-inch (345 mm) Subwoofer Driver, 2 Ω

JL Audio's patented thin-line woofer technology uses a "concentric tube" structure to support the 7-inch diameter voice coil and suspension attachments. This places the large motor structure much further forward than conventional designs allow, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability and mechanical stability.

The v2 improves on the original 13TW5 with 13% greater linear excursion. The cast alloy chassis has been strengthened and the redesigned motor features an annular vent. Both single 2 ohm and single 4 ohm voice coil versions are available.

The 13TW5v2 is optimised for enclosures far smaller than most 12-inch woofers require — only slightly larger than a typical small-box 10-inch woofer needs. Its mounting footprint is comparable to a standard 12-inch woofer.

Best used with 250–600W RMS of amplifier power, the 13TW5v2 is optimised for a 0.80 cu ft (22.7 litre) sealed enclosure. Detailed enclosure recommendations are available in the Specifications tab.

About the JL Audio 13TW5v2-2

From our tech experts at CEN

A JL Audio 13.5 inch TW5 Series subwoofer driver, shallow mount for vehicles where depth rules out a conventional sub, 2 ohm, handling 600w RMS.

Who it suits

Drivers building a system around a properly specified enclosure rather than a box off the shelf. TW5 is the most capable of the thin-line drivers.

Our tech experts advise

This is a driver, not a finished system: enclosure volume and tuning decide most of what you hear, and JL publish specifications worth building to, and the 2 ohm coil decides how it should be wired to your amplifier. We build enclosures to suit both driver and vehicle at our Beeston workshop. Installation is priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an amplifier for this subwoofer?

A: Yes, unless it is an active (powered) subwoofer with a built-in amplifier. Passive subwoofers need an external amplifier matched to the RMS power and impedance shown in the Specification tab.

Q: What size enclosure does this subwoofer need?

A: The recommended enclosure volume is listed in the Specification tab where the manufacturer provides it. As a rule, sealed enclosures give tighter, more accurate bass while ported enclosures deliver more output. Contact CEN if you would like a recommendation for your build.

Q: What does RMS power mean?

A: RMS is the continuous power a subwoofer can handle, and it is the number that matters when matching an amplifier. Peak or max figures describe short bursts only. Match your amplifier output to the RMS rating in the Specification tab.

Q: Sealed or ported enclosure - which should I choose?

A: Sealed boxes are compact and produce tight, controlled bass suited to sound quality builds. Ported boxes are larger and produce more output at low frequencies, suited to those who want maximum impact. Either works well when built to the recommended volume.

Q: Can CEN build or supply an enclosure and fit everything?

A: Yes. CEN supplies enclosures and offers professional installation from our Nottingham premises, including amplifier wiring. Contact us to discuss your build.

Q: What amplifier power does the JL Audio 13TW5v2-2 need?

A: JL Audio recommends 250 - 600W RMS of amplifier power for the 13TW5v2-2. It is rated at 600W RMS continuous power handling (2 ohm impedance).

Q: What box size is recommended for the 13TW5v2-2?

A: The 13TW5v2-2 is optimised for a 0.80 cu ft (22.7 litres) sealed enclosure. Full enclosure details are in the Specification tab.

Q: How deep is the 13TW5v2-2 and what cut-out does it need?

A: The 13TW5v2-2 has a mounting depth of 2.625 in / 67 mm and needs a mounting hole (cut-out) diameter of 12.5 in / 318 mm.

Q: Will the 13TW5v2-2 fit where a 12-inch subwoofer goes?

A: The 13TW5v2 mounting system is designed to fit in about the same footprint as a typical 12-inch woofer, and its enclosure requirement is far smaller than most 12-inch woofers need.
