Audison Prima

The Audison Prima range is built for car enthusiasts who want high-quality audio from components that integrate neatly with factory (OEM) systems — without compromising on space.

The APS 8 R is designed to deliver high acoustic output even from lower-powered amplifiers. It is specifically developed to pair with the Audison AP8.9 bit (2 CH bridged) or AP4.9 bit / AP4 D (2 CH bridged) amplifiers. For a ready-to-install active solution, see the Audison Prima APBX 10 AS2.

  • Ultra-low 79mm (3.11 inch) mounting profile for maximum installation flexibility.
  • Designed for maximum performance in a reflex enclosure from 8.5 litres.
  • Special cone-dustcap-basket geometry provides long linear excursion (approximately 9mm one-way) while minimising mounting depth.
  • Air vents on the basket beneath the spider eliminate the need for a central pole vent, allowing mounting close to the rear wall of the enclosure.
  • Massive motor assembly optimised with FEM (Finite Element Modelling) for precise control under high-excursion conditions.
  • Water-repellent pressed paper 8-inch cone, profiled using FEM simulation and optimised with the Klippel Scan Vibrometer.
  • Steel mesh grille and plastic gasket included.

Reduced mounting depth traditionally means reduced excursion. The APS 8 R addresses this with its special cone-dustcap-basket geometry, delivering large excursion while keeping the mounting depth to a minimum. The surround and spider are carefully designed to prevent rocking-mode distortion. The cooling circuit uses basket air vents beneath the spider, removing the need for bottom-plate vents and allowing the driver to sit close to the back wall of the enclosure.

About the Audison APS 8 R

From our tech experts at CEN

An Audison Prima 8 inch subwoofer driver, 4 ohm, handling 250w RMS.

Who it suits

Drivers building a system where the bass keeps pace with a capable front stage rather than simply being loud. Prima is the accessible end of the Audison range and still built to the same thinking.

Our tech experts advise

This is a driver rather than a finished system: enclosure volume and tuning decide most of what you hear. We build enclosures to suit both driver and vehicle at our Beeston workshop. Installation and tuning are priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. See car audio installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an amplifier for this subwoofer?

A: Yes, unless it is an active (powered) subwoofer with a built-in amplifier. Passive subwoofers need an external amplifier matched to the RMS power and impedance shown in the Specification tab.

Q: What size enclosure does this subwoofer need?

A: The recommended enclosure volume is listed in the Specification tab where the manufacturer provides it. As a rule, sealed enclosures give tighter, more accurate bass while ported enclosures deliver more output. Contact CEN if you would like a recommendation for your build.

Q: What does RMS power mean?

A: RMS is the continuous power a subwoofer can handle, and it is the number that matters when matching an amplifier. Peak or max figures describe short bursts only. Match your amplifier output to the RMS rating in the Specification tab.

Q: Sealed or ported enclosure - which should I choose?

A: Sealed boxes are compact and produce tight, controlled bass suited to sound quality builds. Ported boxes are larger and produce more output at low frequencies, suited to those who want maximum impact. Either works well when built to the recommended volume.

Q: Can CEN build or supply an enclosure and fit everything?

A: Yes. CEN supplies enclosures and offers professional installation from our Nottingham premises, including amplifier wiring. Contact us to discuss your build.

Q: What enclosure does the APS 8 R need?

A: It is designed for an 8.5 litre reflex (ported) enclosure tuned between 30 and 40Hz.

Q: Which amplifier suits the APS 8 R?

A: Audison developed it to pair with the AP8.9 bit (2 channels bridged) or AP4.9 bit / AP4 D (2 channels bridged).

Q: Is there a ready-made enclosure with the APS 8 R?

A: Yes. The Audison Prima APBX 8 R is a slot-ported enclosure designed around the APS 8 R driver.
