Distortion-free Analogue Sound of Class-A AMP
Class-A amplifiers amplify signals without clipping or crossover distortion, producing soft, warm, and natural sound. They are widely regarded as the preferred amplification method for critical listening, but their high power consumption has traditionally made them impractical in portable devices.
The AK PA10 uses a unique Astell&Kern circuit design that reduces power consumption and increases output while minimising noise, making true Class-A amplification viable in a portable form factor.
Class-A Current Control – Intense and Spatial Sound
The AK PA10 offers three-step Class-A current control to suit different headphones and IEMs, allowing you to tailor the intensity and character of the sound to your transducers. Controlling the current value also manages power consumption — the key reason Class-A amplification has historically been avoided in portable devices.
* [Low] Default / [Mid] +50mA / [High] +100mA
Vivid Sound Output of Gain Control
The AK PA10 supports two gain levels to suit a wide range of headphones and IEMs. At high gain with balanced input, output reaches 6.2Vrms, ensuring sufficient drive for demanding transducers.
* [Low Gain] Unbalanced 2.1Vrms / Balanced 4.2Vrms (Condition No Load)
* [High Gain] Unbalanced 3.1Vrms / Balanced 6.2Vrms (Condition No Load)
4.4mm In/Out True Balanced Circuit Design
Many portable headphone amplifiers convert 3.5mm unbalanced signals to 4.4mm balanced, or omit 4.4mm balanced support entirely — both approaches degrade signal integrity. The AK PA10 supports a true 4.4mm balanced input and output, preserving the full balanced signal path from source to headphone. 3.5mm unbalanced input and output are also supported for broader device compatibility.
* Output is available for the same size as the input terminal. Ports cannot be mixed (e.g. 3.5→4.4 / 4.4→3.5).

Astell&Kern
About the Astell&Kern AKA13
From our tech experts at CEN
The Astell&Kern AK PA10 is the brand's first portable Class-A headphone amplifier. It takes a line signal from a player through 3.5mm unbalanced or 4.4mm balanced inputs and offers three-step Class-A current control, two gain settings and hardware crossfeed. Output reaches 6.2Vrms balanced on high gain, with about 12 hours from a 4,200mAh battery.
Who it suits
Owners of a digital audio player who want the warm, natural character of Class-A amplification on the move, with headphones from 16 to 300 ohms. Players such as the A&ultima SP3000 make a natural pairing, strapped together with the supplied rubber bands.
Our tech experts advise
Keep the player's output within the PA10's input maximum of 2Vrms unbalanced or 4Vrms balanced. Higher current settings add intensity but shorten battery life, so drop to Low when travelling. Charging is by USB-C, taking about 3 hours. See our Astell&Kern collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use the 3.5mm input with the 4.4mm output on the AK PA10?
A: No. The output must match the input size, so a 3.5mm input goes to the 3.5mm output and a 4.4mm balanced input goes to the 4.4mm balanced output. Ports cannot be mixed.
Q: How long does the AK PA10 battery last?
A: About 12 hours of playback (unbalanced, low gain). Recharging takes about 3 hours with 9V fast charging or about 4 hours with a standard 5V/2A charger via USB-C.
Q: What headphones suit the AK PA10?
A: Astell&Kern recommends headphones and IEMs with an impedance of 16 to 300 ohms. The three-step current control and two gain settings let you tailor it to each pair.
Q: What's in the box with the AK PA10?
A: The AK PA10 amplifier, a USB Type-C cable, a 3.5mm jack cable and two rubber bands for strapping it to your player.
