HD1200/1: monoblock Class D wide-range amplifier, 1200W
1200W x 1 at 1.5–4 ohms
JL Audio's most powerful HD amplifier uses its Single-Cycle Control switching design and R.I.P.S. technology to deliver 1200W of clean power into any impedance between 1.5 and 4 ohms. This gives maximum flexibility when designing your subwoofer system. Tight power supply regulation keeps distortion low and bass quality high.
Although aimed primarily at subwoofer applications, the HD1200/1 is a wide-range amplifier and can also drive high-performance mid-range speaker systems.
The amplifier features a brushed aluminium finish with black powder-coated cast alloy heat sinks and bottom panel. A black powder-coated, gasketed cover is included to protect the controls.
R.I.P.S.: Regulated, Intelligent Power Supply
R.I.P.S. (Regulated, Intelligent Power Supply) is a central feature of JL Audio's HD and 'Slash' amplifiers, ensuring consistent power delivery across a wide range of battery voltages and load impedances.
"Regulated" means the power supply adjusts its operation to maintain rated power output and low distortion across vehicle voltages from 11V to 14.5V. Conventional unregulated power supplies allow rail voltages to sag when supply voltage drops, causing power loss and audible distortion — even during brief voltage dips. With R.I.P.S., the rail voltage and clean power output remain completely stable, resulting in superior fidelity and stability.
The "Intelligent" element is a circuit that monitors output current to optimise output power across load impedances from 1.5 ohms to 4 ohms per channel. Conventional amplifiers are designed to produce optimum power at one specific impedance — run them above that impedance and they lose power. The R.I.P.S. system detects the actual impedance being driven and adjusts operation automatically to deliver optimum output, taking into account real impedance rather than relying on a speaker's rated impedance. The result is consistent power for a wide range of subwoofer configurations and strong dynamics for satellite channels.
In short: optimum power, at any impedance between 1.5 ohms and 4 ohms per channel, at any vehicle voltage between 11V and 14.5V.
Advanced Rollback Protection
JL Audio's Advanced Rollback Protection monitors the amplifier's thermal condition and adjusts operation to prevent unwanted shut-down events.
If the amplifier reaches an unsafe operating temperature, the circuit rolls back peak power output — without changing gain — until it cools to a safe temperature. This condition is indicated by a red "Thermal" or "Status" LED. Once the amplifier cools down, full peak power is restored and the indicator returns to its normal state. In most cases the rollback is inaudible, keeping music playing even under the most demanding conditions.

About the JL Audio HD1200/1
From our tech experts at CEN
A monoblock subwoofer amplifier from JL Audio’s HD Series, rated at 1200w RMS.
Who it suits
Anyone driving a subwoofer that needs real, controlled power rather than a compact powered unit. HD Series packs high power into a chassis small enough to hide, which is why it ends up in so many tidy installs.
Our tech experts advise
Matching the amplifier to the speakers matters more than headline watts, and the gains want setting with a meter rather than by ear. It also needs a fused feed from the battery on the correct cable gauge. Installation is priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. See car audio installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I choose the right amplifier for my speakers or subwoofer?
A: Match the amplifier's RMS output per channel to the RMS handling of your speakers or subwoofer at the same impedance. The Specification tab lists the power figures. If in doubt, contact CEN with your setup and we will recommend a match.
Q: What wiring do I need to install this amplifier?
A: You will need an amplifier wiring kit sized to the amplifier's power draw, typically including power and earth cable, a fuse, RCA leads and a remote wire. CEN stocks complete wiring kits, and the amplifier's fuse rating is the guide to the cable gauge required.
Q: What class of amplifier is this and does it matter?
A: Class D amplifiers are compact and efficient, ideal for subwoofers and modern installs. Class AB designs are traditionally favoured for outright sound quality on mid and high frequencies. The class is listed in the Specification tab where provided.
Q: Will an amplifier work with my factory head unit?
A: Yes, in most cases. If your head unit has no RCA outputs you will need a line output converter to feed the amplifier a clean signal. CEN stocks line output converters and can advise the right one for your vehicle.
Q: Can CEN install this amplifier?
A: Yes. CEN offers professional amplifier installation from our Nottingham premises, including secure mounting, wiring and setup. Contact us to book.
Q: Does the JL Audio HD1200/1 lose power at higher impedances?
A: No. Thanks to the R.I.P.S. power supply, the HD1200/1 delivers 1200W RMS into any impedance from 1.5 to 4 ohms, at both 14.4V and 12.5V.
Q: Can the HD1200/1 be used for speakers other than subwoofers?
A: Yes. It is a wide-range amplifier with a 6Hz to 8kHz frequency response and a switchable low-pass or high-pass filter, so it can also drive high-performance mid-range speaker systems.
Q: What fuse and cable does the HD1200/1 need?
A: The fuse rating is 100A and JL Audio specifies a minimum of 2 AWG copper power and ground wire.
