RD500/1 monoblock Class D subwoofer amplifier: 500W x 1 at 2 ohms, 250W x 1 at 4 ohms (14.4V)

The RD500/1 delivers 500W into 2 ohms (14.4V, 1% THD) from an ultra-compact chassis, powered by JL Audio's proprietary NexD™ switching technology for high output, precise efficiency and very low distortion.

Controls are located on top of the amplifier beneath a protective cover, with all connections along one side of the chassis. Signal processing includes a 12dB/octave low-pass filter variable from 50Hz to 500Hz, a variable bass boost EQ, and dual-range differential-balanced inputs compatible with most input voltage levels. Automatic turn-on via signal sensing or DC-offset sensing is standard, along with preamp outputs to pass signals to a second amplifier.

An onboard LED clipping indicator lets you set input sensitivity quickly and accurately without special equipment. The RD500/1 has a black powder-coated finish and a top-mounted dual-colour LED strip showing overall status. An optional RBC-1 remote level control (sold separately) allows subwoofer level adjustment from the driver's seat.

NexD™ switching technology

NexD™ technology delivers exceptional audio quality, high efficiency and high power from compact amplifier designs.

JL Audio has been at the forefront of Class D amplifier design since its original "Slash" subwoofer amplifiers. NexD™ stems from this expertise to deliver outstanding fidelity and efficiency in a compact, high-value package.

A traditional PWM switching amplifier uses a fixed switching frequency and varies pulse width based solely on the audio input signal. This assumes ideal conditions — such as a steady power supply — that don't always occur in a real car installation. Power supply sag causes distortion at all power levels, even well below clipping. Feedback can correct this, but becomes impractical at higher audio frequencies, making it better suited to band-limited subwoofer amplifiers than full-range designs.

For the NexD™ subwoofer amplifiers, JL Audio uses a fixed PWM approach enhanced with a switching frequency of 240kHz. This extends bandwidth to at least 500Hz with minimal distortion, improves efficiency, and keeps circuitry compact for tight, controlled bass performance.

For full-range NexD™ amplifiers and channels, JL Audio applies a variable, ultra-high-speed version of NexD™ technology switching at well over 400kHz. A self-oscillating modulator with feed-forward sends information about the instantaneous power supply voltage to the modulator, combining it with the input signal to cancel distortion caused by supply voltage fluctuation — reducing distortion before feedback is even applied, and simplifying the overall feedback loop design.

The result is clean, powerful and reliable audio.

About the JL Audio RD500/1

From our tech experts at CEN

A monoblock subwoofer amplifier from JL Audio’s range, rated at 500w RMS.

Who it suits

Anyone driving a subwoofer that needs real, controlled power rather than a compact powered unit.

Our tech experts advise

Matching the amplifier to the speakers matters more than headline watts, and the gains want setting with a meter rather than by ear. It also needs a fused feed from the battery on the correct cable gauge. Installation is priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I choose the right amplifier for my speakers or subwoofer?

A: Match the amplifier's RMS output per channel to the RMS handling of your speakers or subwoofer at the same impedance. The Specification tab lists the power figures. If in doubt, contact CEN with your setup and we will recommend a match.

Q: What wiring do I need to install this amplifier?

A: You will need an amplifier wiring kit sized to the amplifier's power draw, typically including power and earth cable, a fuse, RCA leads and a remote wire. CEN stocks complete wiring kits, and the amplifier's fuse rating is the guide to the cable gauge required.

Q: What class of amplifier is this and does it matter?

A: Class D amplifiers are compact and efficient, ideal for subwoofers and modern installs. Class AB designs are traditionally favoured for outright sound quality on mid and high frequencies. The class is listed in the Specification tab where provided.

Q: Will an amplifier work with my factory head unit?

A: Yes, in most cases. If your head unit has no RCA outputs you will need a line output converter to feed the amplifier a clean signal. CEN stocks line output converters and can advise the right one for your vehicle.

Q: Can CEN install this amplifier?

A: Yes. CEN offers professional amplifier installation from our Nottingham premises, including secure mounting, wiring and setup. Contact us to book.

Q: What is the lowest impedance the JL Audio RD500/1 can run?

A: It is rated down to 2 ohms, where it delivers 500W RMS. It is not rated for 1.5 ohm loads, so wire your subwoofer to 2, 3 or 4 ohms.

Q: Can the RD500/1 be connected to a factory head unit?

A: Yes. Its dual-range, differential-balanced inputs accept most input voltage levels, and automatic turn-on via signal sensing or DC-offset sensing means a separate remote wire is not always needed.

Q: What wiring does the RD500/1 need?

A: JL Audio specifies a minimum of 4 AWG copper power and ground wire with a 50A fuse (AFS, AGU or MaxiFuse).
