Almost any car can have Apple CarPlay added, whatever its age — the work is choosing a head unit that fits the dashboard and keeping the car's existing controls working. For most drivers it's the single most transformative upgrade: modern navigation, proper music and hands-free calling in a car that never shipped with them.
What you actually get
CarPlay puts your phone's maps, music, messages and calls on the car's screen with Siri control — live traffic routing instead of an out-of-date built-in sat nav, and your own playlists and podcasts rather than a CD changer. Android Auto does the same for Android phones, and virtually every unit we sell supports both.
The fitment question
This is where retrofits succeed or fail. Older cars typically have a single-DIN or double-DIN aperture, and a model-specific fascia adapter makes a modern unit look factory rather than aftermarket. If the aperture is small, a floating-screen design like the Alpine iLX-F905D Halo9 mounts a 9-inch display in front of the dash rather than inside it — which is how a classic-shaped dashboard ends up with a screen it was never designed to take. Our CarPlay stereo buying guide covers the full range of options.
Keeping what the car already does
A good retrofit loses nothing. Steering wheel controls are retained with an interface, reversing cameras and parking sensors can be integrated, and DAB radio usually arrives as a bonus. In classics, RetroSound's period-styled units add CarPlay-era convenience behind a face that suits the dashboard.
What it costs and who fits it
The stereo is only part of it: fascia, harness, aerial adapter and any control interface are what make it look and behave like it came from the factory. We quote the whole package rather than the box alone, and fit from our Nottingham premises — send us your car's year and model and we'll confirm exactly what's needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can any car have CarPlay added?
Almost any. The question is which stereo fits your dashboard and whether a fascia adapter exists for your model — that's what we check before recommending anything.
Will I lose my steering wheel controls?
No — a steering wheel control interface retains them, and we fit one as standard where the car needs it.
Wired or wireless CarPlay?
Wireless is more convenient day to day; wired charges as it goes and never drops out. Most current units do both, so you can choose per journey.
