RD1500/1 Monoblock Class D Subwoofer Amplifier
1500 W x 1 @ 1–2 Ω / 750 W x 1 @ 4 Ω — 14.4 V
The RD1500/1 is built for high-power subwoofer applications. A special low-impedance circuit allows 1500 W output at 1 or 2 ohms (14.4 V, 1% THD). JL Audio's exclusive NexD™ Class D technology sits at the core, delivering high efficiency and low distortion from a slim, compact chassis.
All controls are located on top of the amplifier beneath a protective cover, with all connections running along one side of the chassis. Signal processing includes a 12 dB/octave low-pass filter with continuously variable frequency selection from 50–500 Hz, plus a variable bass boost EQ.
Dual-range, differential-balance inputs accept most input voltage levels. Automatic turn-on (via signal sensing or DC-offset sensing) is standard, and a set of preamp outputs lets you pass signals to a second amplifier.
An onboard LED clipping indicator allows accurate input sensitivity setting without special equipment. A top-mounted dual-colour LED light strip reports overall amplifier status and condition. The RD1500/1 has a durable black powder-coated finish. Subwoofer level can be controlled from the driver's seat using the optional RBC-1 remote level control (sold separately).
NexD™ Switching Technology
NexD™ technology delivers exceptional audio quality, high efficiency and high power from compact amplifier designs.
JL Audio has been at the forefront of Class D amplifier design since the original 'Slash' subwoofer amplifiers. NexD™ stems from that expertise to deliver outstanding fidelity and efficiency, producing compact amplifiers with high power output and strong value.
A traditional PWM switching amplifier uses a fixed switching frequency and varies pulse width based solely on the audio input signal. This assumes ideal conditions — such as a steady power supply — that do not always occur in a real car installation. Power supply sag causes distortion at all power levels in these designs, even well below clipping.
Feedback can correct this, but becomes impractical as audio frequency increases. This makes it a practical solution for band-limited subwoofer amplifiers, but not for full-range designs.
For the NexD™ subwoofer amplifiers, JL Audio enhanced the fixed PWM approach with a very high switching frequency of 240 kHz. This extends bandwidth to at least 500 Hz with minimal distortion, improves efficiency, and keeps circuitry compact — resulting in tight, controlled bass performance.
For full-range NexD™ amplifiers and channels, a variable ultra-high-speed version switches at well over 400 kHz. A self-oscillating modulator with "feed-forward" sends information about instantaneous power supply voltage to the modulator, combining it with the input signal to cancel distortion caused by supply voltage fluctuation. This reduces distortion before feedback is applied, simplifying the overall feedback loop design.
The result is clean, powerful and reliable audio.

About the JL Audio RD1500/1
From our tech experts at CEN
A monoblock subwoofer amplifier from JL Audio’s RD Series, rated at 1500w RMS.
Who it suits
Anyone driving a subwoofer that needs real, controlled power rather than a compact powered unit. RD Series is the workhorse: efficient Class D with enough power for most builds.
Our tech experts advise
Matching the amplifier to the speakers matters more than headline watts, and the gains want setting with a meter rather than by ear. It also needs a fused feed from the battery on the correct cable gauge. Installation is priced per vehicle, so get in touch with your make, model and year and we will confirm what it needs. See car audio installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I choose the right amplifier for my speakers or subwoofer?
A: Match the amplifier's RMS output per channel to the RMS handling of your speakers or subwoofer at the same impedance. The Specification tab lists the power figures. If in doubt, contact CEN with your setup and we will recommend a match.
Q: What wiring do I need to install this amplifier?
A: You will need an amplifier wiring kit sized to the amplifier's power draw, typically including power and earth cable, a fuse, RCA leads and a remote wire. CEN stocks complete wiring kits, and the amplifier's fuse rating is the guide to the cable gauge required.
Q: What class of amplifier is this and does it matter?
A: Class D amplifiers are compact and efficient, ideal for subwoofers and modern installs. Class AB designs are traditionally favoured for outright sound quality on mid and high frequencies. The class is listed in the Specification tab where provided.
Q: Will an amplifier work with my factory head unit?
A: Yes, in most cases. If your head unit has no RCA outputs you will need a line output converter to feed the amplifier a clean signal. CEN stocks line output converters and can advise the right one for your vehicle.
Q: Can CEN install this amplifier?
A: Yes. CEN offers professional amplifier installation from our Nottingham premises, including secure mounting, wiring and setup. Contact us to book.
Q: What impedance can the JL Audio RD1500/1 run at?
A: It is stable down to 1 ohm. At 14.4 V it delivers 750 W RMS at 4 ohms, 1000 W at 3 ohms and 1500 W at 2 or 1 ohm. The Low Z switch must be set to the 2 ohm position for 2 to 4 ohm loads and to the 1 ohm position for 1 ohm.
Q: What fuse and wire size does the RD1500/1 need?
A: The amplifier has a 150A fuse rating (AFS or AGU) and needs a minimum of 2 AWG copper power and ground wire.
Q: Does the JL Audio RD1500/1 come with a remote bass control?
A: No. Remote subwoofer level control is available with the optional JL Audio RBC-1, sold separately. The box contains the amplifier, a JL Audio badge, 3 mm and 2.5 mm Allen wrenches and the owner's manual.
